At the time of it's release in the fall of 2009 the Chipotle iPhone app sets the standard for fast food convenience. The app leveraged the GPS functionality to locate the Chipotle nearest you, then let's you build your meal exactly how you want it, and let's you securely pay ahead of time so there's no need to wait in that long line again. If that wasn't enough, it saves your orders making repeat visits even easier.

The app won accolades from the tech blogosphere and has been downloaded by well over 1 million people - all by word of mouth. Chipotle fans love the app almost as much as they love their burrito.

Easily order anything you want, any way you like it.

Sequence is a creative branding agency in San Francisco and New York with a focus on new technologies, brand building and user experiences. While at Sequence, I helped design and develop the innovative site for sequence.com.

The "Home Page" is composed of nine tiles that lead into deeper areas of the site.

&#60;img src="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_home_tile1_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_home_tile1_o.jpg" data-mid="21190503"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_home_tile2_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_home_tile2_o.jpg" data-mid="21190506"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_home_tile3_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_home_tile3_o.jpg" data-mid="21190510"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The "Work" section clears the screen to a solid white background and the work takes center stage. The site and the example pages are projects

&#60;img src="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_work_chevron_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_work_chevron_o.jpg" data-mid="21190516"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_work_chipotle_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_work_chipotle_o.jpg" data-mid="21190519"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_work_googleventures_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4044373/sequence_work_googleventures_o.jpg" data-mid="21190521"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Built with advanced javascript transitions between pages instead of using Flash, and using mouse or keyboard controls to navigate. In 2009 this kind of site was clearly ahead of the curve.

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4043321/chase_lead_image_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload87.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/4043321/chase_lead_image_o.jpg" data-mid="21187985"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
The redesign of Chase.com began in early 2011, and I joined a small core team of talented designers, working in various locations around the country. The design style is sophisticated and contemporary and targeting the mass-affluent market. The idea of "progressive disclosure", showing information as needed, became guiding principle to keep the pages free of clutter. Content was brief and paired with iconic imagery, body text was larger the other sites, and padding was generous - the pages almost read themselves. Color cues are carefully considered to drive action and encourage a deeper experience.

For the small team to create several hundred pages in a condensed timeframe we developed efficient systems for making pages that included grids, symbol libraries, module types, headers, icons, and image styles.

Wealth Management

For the Wealth Management section messages, layout and imagery were designed to appeal to an investors fast paced work day with a refined sense of style.

Over the span of a year I created several parts for Chase.com. The icons were were often used large beside minimal text in airy layouts to convey simplicity and generate interest.

General Style Version 1: Objects are simplified and stylized, isometric, hard surfaces as if made of plastic, crisps edges, cast shadows from the front and right
&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_phase1_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_phase1_o.jpg" data-mid="21158230"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

General Style Version 2: Objects are more complex and appear from real life, facing front, using subtle textures, cast shadows are from above and center

Chase Advantage

The page "The Chase Advantage" was heavily considered as it directly addresses the Chase brand attributes and core messaging. Below is a study of possible ways to illustrate the Chase Advantage. The illustration must incorporate the Chase brand in an instant.

v1: The Shared Experience
Bringing the Chase Checking account to life by showing polaroids of interacting with and accessing their Chase account. Photographs emote personal and shared experiences.
&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v1sharedexp2_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v1sharedexp2_o.jpg" data-mid="21183080"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

v2: Interface and Object
By showing the actual Chase interface with mobile and a traditional check book, this option shows exactly what you get.
&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v2interfaceobject2_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v2interfaceobject2_o.jpg" data-mid="21183083"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

v3: Moments
Taking a photograph even further, this option depicts the broader experience of banking with Chase through images of when customers connect to Chase in the convenient ways.
&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v3moments2_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v3moments2_o.jpg" data-mid="21183084"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

v4: Dashboard
This option references a touch interface displaying the ways to bank at Chase.
&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v4dashboard2_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3950467/chase_icons_advantage_v4dashboard2_o.jpg" data-mid="21183086"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;</description>

		<description>&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_leadimage_9_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_leadimage_9_o.jpg" data-mid="20589975"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
In 2008 MySpace was undisputedly the social giant with 250 million users expressing themselves with reckless abandon. It was chaos, and that's just how the founders liked it. But that didn't appeal to everyone and momentum was quickly shifting to the tidy pages of Facebook and a redesign was needed if they wanted to stay a vital stop on the web.

MySpace called upon Adaptive Path in San Francisco to help with a relatively small feature that later grew into a major update to key sections of the site. Adaptive Path approached Sequence for design support and I began working for both companies. While unconventional, the arrangement was possible due to the quality leadership at both Sequence and Adaptive Path.

I worked closely with the Adaptive Path team that included: Ryan Freitas, Teresa Brazen, Alexa Andrzejewski, Todd Wilkens, Todd Elliott and Jesse James Garrett. For six months, Ryan and I met once a week with founder Tom Anderson, as well as Tom Andrus, Steve Pearman, Amit Kapor and Chris DeWolf to shape the new features that were to launch in the summer.

MySpace Phase I: Focused on a method to categorize friends into more useful ways. The categorization tool used game-like interaction to view and group your friends see how many friends were not yet categorized.

The "Friends" page before and after:
&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_friends_before_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_friends_before_o.jpg" data-mid="20588387"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_friends_after_1_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_friends_after_1_o.jpg" data-mid="20588383"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_friends_after_2_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload82.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/3940344/myspace_friends_after_2_o.jpg" data-mid="20588384"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

MySpace Phase II: Focused on MySpace.com, user profile page layout, and search results. The existing home page left users to parse a sea of links and left advertisers clamoring over small boxes with little information. The redesign of MySpace.com featured a full width Hero banner that could promote in dynamic ways. From a basic LREC ad, to a full Hero ad, or for the big money, a full-page take-over - all this made the Marketing department very happy. The page design easily surfaced 25 stories above the fold, and featured a global navigation that was whittled from 18 links to 6 easy groups.

The MySpace.com home page, before and after

The launch of "MySpace 2.0" was June 18th, 2008 affected five major areas of the service: homepage, navigation, profile editor, search and more.

Burners Without Borders (BWB) is a grassroots organization that taps creativity within communities to solve problems and bring about change. Founded by participants of Burning Man, the event of self-expression and self-reliance, the "Burners" as they are called, are uniquely suited for disaster relief anywhere in the world. The volunteers of BWB roll up their sleeves and embody the "can do" spirit, therefore Rosie the Riveter is back at work, this time as the wooden icon of Burning Man for the BWB logo. Since the logos introduction BWB has grown into a dynamic international, volunteer organization.

The design of the logo expresses the "can do spirit" of Burners without Borders.

Zinio is a digital publishing platform that brings you magazines exactly as you see in print versions, but packed with the power and convenience of the digital form. Each issue is delivered to your desktop, for you to read anytime, anywhere - even offline - using the intuitive and interactive Zinio Reader.

The Zinio Reader is a fast, light, downloadable application that features clipping, bookmarks, customizable zoom and access to new, enhanced content. As the Sr Designer I worked to make every aspect of the interface to stand back and let the magazines take the stage, to make every interaction intuitive on sight using clear visual cues. And while we were at it, we provided a little extra enticement that is known with digital media.

Bonhams is a British auctioneer of fine art, collectibles and antiques and has remained a a premier international auction house since it was established in 1793. I worked as a Sr Designer and Creative Lead to achieve a visual balance that was both approachable and sophisticated, as well as creating a flexible, modular platform that's easily accommodates a vast array of changing "lots", or sale items.

A refined set of color, typography and imagery combined with generous spacing to create a stylish gallery ambiance that puts the focus on sale items while providing clear calls to action for customers to buy, sell, track and save.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/1167069/bonhams_02_category_640.jpg" width="640" height="480" width_o="1024" height_o="768" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/82855/1167069/bonhams_02_category_o.jpg" data-mid="5623416"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The "Item Detail View" has multiple images, tracking information, print, share, currency preference, and similar items. Workflows for managing the lots you are tracking were derived from user testing.

"My Bonhams" is the modular hub of activity and could be easily customized to each user.
